Curb Appeal Over the Weekend: 10 Great Ideas!

The front of your home can make a big impact on your guests. It is what gives your home its curb appeal and sets the stage for what your home is on the inside.

When it comes to curb appeal, sometimes all it takes is a slap of paint and a little creativity. Whether you’re putting your home on the market or simply want to make guests feel more at home, making a few changes to the outside of your home goes a long way in improving your home’s curb appeal.

Aside from the common stuff like pulling weeds and general clean up — here is a roundup of curb appeal ideas. The best part? Most of these are easy enough to make into a weekend project.

1. Give Your Front Door A Facelift

Replacing an old door makes a huge difference, but you can save a considerable amount of money by grabbing a can of paint. This is a great solution for people with small porches who don’t have a lot of room for decorating.

2. Grab a Seat

If you have a big front porch, the best part about it is probably the fact that it acts like a whole other room in your house. If you have a get-together sized porch, make it get-together friendly!

Don’t just slap a few iron chairs and a wobbly table out there and expect people to make themselves at home. Opt for cushy (but still weather resistant) furniture that lends itself to a few hours of lingering. While seating isn’t a must for a small porch, a quality rocking chair might motivate you to spend more time on your porch and will definitely add to your porch’s picturesque quality.

3. Camouflage or Cover Outdoor Eyesores

Electrical boxes, piping, wires and air conditioners can detract from the look of your home. Painting electrical boxes (or anything that stands out) the same color as your house will make them much less noticeable. If you’re the handy type, you can make some great covers for these items – check out this article at Remodelaholic for some great ideas!

4. Elegantly Hidden Hoses

There are actually pots to hide your garden hose! Hose pots come in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials – from plastic and ceramic to high end copper with matching copper colored hoses. The only difference from a regular pot is that there’s a small hole for the hose in the back so it can be connected to the water faucet. Another great idea is to keep your hose hidden in a storage bench – you can build one like this from Sunset Magazine or just drill a hole in the back of an existing bench.

5. Shine On With Solar Lights

Curb appeal doesn’t have to be limited to daytime viewing. Give your yard a dramatic presentation at night with easy-to-install solar lights…no wiring required. Solar lights come in many types and designs and are a great way to light up trees, shrubs, walkways and decks – without adding to your electric bill!

6. Seasonal Curb Appeal

Other than tasty treats and fun family events, the best way to welcome a new season is to show all of your neighbors and guests your sense of spring/fall/Christmas spirit. Decorating for a holiday or season helps us slow down and appreciate the sentiments that that particular time evokes. Just make sure to change decorations in a timely manner so you don’t go from being the enthusiastic neighbor to the annoying neighbor whose adorable Halloween ghosts are still lingering in the yard at Thanksgiving.

7. Add Flowers or Plants

Potted plants and hanging baskets are an easy and cost effective way to add color and interest to your front porch. Consider mixing in varieties that will attract butterflies and hummingbirds for viewing pleasure.

8. Give Your Garage Door a Makeover

Drastically improve your curb appeal by adding life and character to that weathered garaged door with this faux wood look using gel stain. Here’s a great “How To” at Domestically-Speaking.

9. Cover Exposed Foundation

While using stone to cover the entire foundation of your home can be pretty pricey, there are some great faux panels options available. They come in faux rock, stone, brick and wood, with several different styles and colors to choose from. These could be great for the inside of the home as well – like a fireplace surround or accent wall! Check out these great products and inspiration at FauxPanels.com

10. Color Your Concrete

Staining your front porch, walkway, or both with concrete stain can give your home a fresh and updated look.  There are even techniques to make faux grout lines, creating the look of tile. Check out this article at Front Porch Ideas for more info.
